Bishan is better known for million-dollar HDB flats than for sightseeing, but Hidden Heritage’s new two-hour walk, Under One Roof, makes a good case for a Saturday or Sunday morning there. The highlight is a VIP viewing gallery at the top of an HDB block, built to show Singapore’s new towns to foreign dignitaries and rarely opened to the public.

Why go?
Hidden Heritage describes the gallery as “rarely accessible” and “originally made to showcase Singapore’s developments to foreign dignitaries”. HDB built a handful of these top-floor viewing galleries in its new towns, and they are normally kept locked, so a guided visit is the simplest way to see one.
The rest of the walk explains why Bishan looks the way it does. Much of the town was once Peck San Theng, one of Singapore’s largest Chinese cemeteries with over 100,000 graves, before it was redeveloped from the 1980s. The tour covers that story, the estate’s pitched-roof HDB blocks and an old-school playground.
What to do
01 · Step into the VIP viewing gallery
The tour’s headline stop is the HDB VIP viewing gallery. Hidden Heritage doesn’t say which block it is in, so the location stays a surprise until the day; just follow your guide.
02 · Browse the void-deck nostalgia museum
The route also stops at what Hidden Heritage calls a nostalgic treasure trove: vintage collectibles, old posters and memorabilia, plus a community library.
03 · Meet Bishan’s neighbourhood shops
The tour is run with the Federation of Merchants Association (FMAS) and the Bishan Merchants Association, and includes meeting the people behind Bishan’s neighbourhood businesses. If you’re in the area afterwards, the riverside lawns of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park are close by (suggestion).
